How to Verify an Unclaimed-Property Notice

If you received a notice about unclaimed property, you should verify the record independently before sharing personal information or signing anything. Here is how.

Step 1: Search official state databases

Each U.S. state maintains a free, publicly searchable unclaimed-property database. The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) operates a centralized search portal at MissingMoney.com. You can also search directly at Unclaimed.org, which links to each state's official program.

Search using your name, any former names, and prior addresses. If the property belongs to a deceased relative or a business, search under those names as well.

• Requests for bank passwords or full Social Security numbers by email
• Demands for upfront payment before any work is done
• Claims of government affiliation
